From “Brutal” Headaches to Relief: Melissa’s Migraine Story

First Name: Melissa

Age: 26

Location: Brampton, Ontario

Years with migraine: 5

Occupation: Developmental Services Worker (supporting individuals with special needs)

Melissa’s migraine treatment journey

How long have you had migraine?

I first noticed issues in 2015, then was diagnosed in 2019. It was so brutal. It wasn’t a normal headache for me —I would be in my room for a day, I wasn’t able to eat, I would be trying to hit my head to make the pain go away. The diagnosis was a relief, because at last we could see what’s happening with my brain, with my migraine. The pain was very unbearable… It was just the most excruciating pain I’ve ever had.

What does your migraine feel like?

It starts under my eyes, and I can feel the pulsation. Sometimes it’s on the left side or the right side of my face. When I feel certain muscles in my neck get knotty, then I know a migraine’s coming. I can feel my sinuses getting really puffy and swollen on the inside, too. That’s another indicator.

What are your migraine triggers?

Weather. Stress. If I don’t sleep enough. Certain smells, like perfumes and candles. But they often don’t get me until a day or two later.

What migraine treatments did you try pre-CEFALY?

I was just taking Tylenol or Advil, and that wasn’t working. I tried some prescription medications. I would try essential oils, specifically eucalyptus; I even hung eucalyptus in my shower. They work sometimes, but not as good as CEFALY does.

I used acupuncture and massage therapy. Often, I would just sleep in a dark room. Those were honestly the only things that I could do.

How did you hear about CEFALY?

My friend actually suggested it to me, two years ago. She’s also a migraine sufferer. I looked into it, and I talked to my doctor about it.

What has your CEFALY experience been like?

I took to it right away. The first time I tried it, it was a little intense. But the second time, it wasn’t strong enough. Then, I realized you could make the intensity higher. It helps so much. I love it. I love the pulsation, the sensation it gives me. It makes my brain almost feel numb. Which probably doesn’t sound good, but it means I have no pain and can go on with my day.

What made you want to share your story?

I think a lot of people are suffering, and they don’t know what to do. If someone can relate to my story in any way, then I can help benefit people. I just love helping people. Looking at the price of it, I was a little scared at first. But at the end of the day, your health is so important. To invest in your health, you’re doing the best thing for your body.
