How does Cefaly work?
The trigeminal nerve — the primary nerve involved in migraine pain — is located under the skin of your forehead. The Cefaly device stimulates the endings of this nerve via an electrode positioned on the forehead between the eyebrows. Once the electrode has been placed on your forehead, the device magnetically secures to the electrode, establishes a connection, and begins to send tiny electrical impulses through the top branch into the trigeminal nerve.

How do I use the Prevent treatment mode?
- You will hear two beeps to indicate your Prevent program selection.
- For the CEFALY DUAL, the green indicator light flashes twice throughout the Prevent program. It may take several seconds for flashing to begin.
- For the CEFALY Enhanced and Connected, there will be two intermittent purple flashes of light to indicate the Prevent treatment mode. It may take several seconds for flashing to begin.
Am I supposed to use the Prevent treatment every day?
Yes. To effectively reduce migraine frequency, the 20-minute Prevent treatment should be used every day. Occasional use of the Prevent mode may not be effective.
Allow at least two to three months to see results. Cefaly works by gradually desensitizing the trigeminal nerve, so consistent daily use is key. If you notice even a small change in your migraine frequency, that means you’re responding to treatment. Keep going, and use the Cefaly app to track your progress.
How do I use the Acute treatment mode?
- You will hear a single beep to indicate your Acute program selection.
- For the CEFALY DUAL, a green indicator light will flash once throughout the program to indicate Acute treatment mode. It may take several seconds for flashing to begin.
- For the CEFALY Enhanced and Connected, there will be one intermittent turquoise flash of light to indicate Acute treatment mode. It may take several seconds for flashing to begin.
What does it feel like to use Cefaly?
Cefaly treatment may feel like a gentle tingling, prickling, or vibrating. Using your Cefaly should never feel uncomfortable or painful.
You’re always in control of your treatment intensity. You do not have to use Cefaly at maximum intensity to see treatment benefits.
During treatment, the stimulation will get stronger for the first 14 minutes of the session, until it reaches the maximum level. When you definitely notice the feeling, but it still feels comfortable, press the Cefaly device button or press STABILIZE in the Cefaly app. The stimulation will not get any stronger.
If treatment feels too weak, press + in the app to increase the intensity by about 1%.
If treatment feels too strong, press STOP in the app. Or twist the device, then pull it away from your forehead. Then, restart your session.
If your eyebrow or eyelid twitches for 3 minutes or more, the electrode might be in the wrong place. Stop treatment, and try moving the electrode up slightly. Then, restart treatment.
What if the intensity is too strong for me?
You’re always in control of your treatment. You do not have to use Cefaly at maximum intensity to see treatment benefits. Use Cefaly at an intensity level that allows you to complete the entire Acute or Prevent treatment.
You should use Cefaly at an intensity where you feel a strong vibration or stimulation sensation that is not painful.
During treatment, the stimulation will get stronger for the first 14 minutes of the session, until it reaches the maximum level. When you definitely notice the feeling, but it still feels comfortable, press the Cefaly button or press STABILIZE in the Cefaly app. The stimulation will not get any stronger.
If treatment feels too weak, press + in the app to increase the intensity by about 1%.
If treatment feels too strong, press STOP in the app. Or twist the device, then pull it away from your forehead. Then, restart your session.
How do I rapidly increase the treatment intensity?
Rapidly increasing the treatment intensity is recommended only for experienced Cefaly users who are accustomed to a higher stimulation intensity.
To increase the intensity, press and hold the device button anytime during the first 14 minutes of a session. When you release the button, the intensity will stabilize and remain constant. Should you press and hold the button again, the intensity will increase again. The maximum intensity is reached after pressing and holding the button for 30 consecutive seconds at the onset of your session. You can also press + in the app to increase the intensity by about 1%.
How long does it take before I start seeing results?
When you’re using the 60-minute Acute treatment, you should feel pain relief after 1-2 sessions. For the best results, start the Acute program at the very earliest sign of a migraine attack.
When using the 20-minute Prevent treatment, allow at least two to three months to see results. Cefaly works by gradually stimulating and desensitizing the trigeminal nerve, so consistent daily use is key.
If you experience even a modest improvement in your symptoms in the first weeks, this means your migraine is responding to the Cefaly treatment. Keep using your Cefaly consistently, and you should experience less frequent migraine attacks.
Can I reuse my electrodes?
With proper care, electrodes can be reused. The number of uses varies based on skin prep, proper storage and activity level while using the device.
Cleanse and dry your skin before every Cefaly treatment. This will help ensure the electrode attaches securely to your forehead. Use soap and water to wash between and above your eyebrows, and then dry thoroughly. The use of makeup-removing products, moisturizing facial cleansers, and alcohol/alcohol wipes are NOT recommended as a substitute for soap and water. Use of any of these products may reduce the lifespan of the electrodes.
Once the session ends, the electrode should be placed back onto its transparent plastic backing sheet and stored inside the resealable electrode storage bag.
Do not leave the electrode exposed and unpackaged, especially in a dry place. It will dehydrate and will no longer function as designed.
How do I know when it is time for a new electrode?
Throw your electrode away and get a one if:
- You notice the electrode gel is dried out, dirty, cracked, or clumping
- The electrode curls up at the edges when you apply it to your skin, or it doesn’t stay in place during treatment
- You notice the stimulation feels different or causes any discomfort
How do I manage my electrode subscription account?
Sign into your account to manage your subscription. Go to “Manage Subscription” to change your next shipment date or cancel at any time.
How long will my battery last?
A fully charged battery will last for about 5-7 hours of treatment, depending on the Cefaly model you have and the program and intensity used.
How do I know when Cefaly needs to be charged?
If the CEFALY DUAL emits a long beep when you press the button, this means the battery charge is too low.
If the CEFALY Enhanced or CEFALY Connected emits a long beep, or shows a yellow LED color, this means the battery charge is too low.
When you pair CEFALY Connected with the Cefaly app, you’ll see the current battery level and get a notification when it’s at 20%.
Can I use Cefaly with Botox?
There is no contraindication for using Cefaly with Botox injections. If you are interested in Cefaly treatments and Botox injections, we recommend that you discuss both therapies with your healthcare provider.
If you already receive Botox injections for chronic migraine, we recommend waiting 48-72 hours after an injection before placing a Cefaly electrode and starting Cefaly treatments.
If you are new to both Cefaly and Botox treatments, we recommend starting one therapy at a time and waiting at least three months before beginning the other treatment.
What is the Cefaly app?
The Cefaly app is the free companion app for CEFALY Connected. Pair your Cefaly device to easily select, adjust, and monitor your Acute or Prevent sessions in real time. Get actionable insights by tracking treatments, symptoms and health data. Generate personalized migraine reports to share with your healthcare provider.
How do I create an account in the app?
When you first download the Cefaly app, you will be asked to either sign in or create an account. If you are new to the app, choose how you want to create an account: sign up with email, or sign in with Google or your Apple ID.
How do I connect the app to my CEFALY Connected device?
First, create and sign into your account.
- Start pairing: Open the app and tap the device status bar on the home screen.
- Wake your device: Press the button on your Cefaly. The light will blink dark blue.
- Enter your PIN: When prompted, enter the 6-digit code found under the magnets on the back of your Cefaly. (The app will save this for future sessions.)
- Confirm: Once connected, your Cefaly will beep and show a solid dark blue light.
What can I learn from tracking my migraines?
Tracking is about learning your migraine rhythms, so you can strengthen your prevention routine. By logging treatments and attacks, you’ll uncover your average intensity, duration, and specific triggers, creating a personalized report you can share with your doctor to guide your care plan.
What can I learn from integrating my health wearables with the app?
If you already track your health data with Garmin, Fitbit, Oura, Apple Health, Google Health, or another supported platform, you can securely add your activity and sleep data to the Cefaly app.
This can help you learn how lifestyle factors affect migraine. For some people, migraine is triggered by irregular sleep schedules, or getting too much or not enough sleep. Some people also find that regular exercise helps migraine.

The Cefaly emits one long beep and/or displays a yellow light when the button is pressed.
This indicates that the battery needs to be charged. Please charge your device for at least 4
hours for a full charge.
The Cefaly turned off during my session.
Possible causes:
• Your electrode may not be adhering well to your forehead.
• Your Cefaly may not be properly secured to the electrode.
• The battery charge is too low.
Solutions:
• Cleanse your skin with soap and water, dry thoroughly, reposition the
electrode, reattach the Cefaly, and try again. Ensure the electrode is applied
evenly, smoothing it down with your fingers to eliminate air pockets.
• Use a mirror to verify that the magnetic contacts between the device and
electrode are properly aligned.
• Recharge the battery for at least 4 hours.
I cannot feel any stimulation.
Possible causes:
- The electrode may not be adhering well to your forehead.
- The Cefaly may not be properly secured to the electrode.
- You might be desensitized to the lower-strength pulses at the beginning of a
session. - You may have accidentally pressed the button to stabilize at a low intensity,
preventing further increase.
Solutions:
- Cleanse your skin with soap and water, dry thoroughly, reposition the electrode,
reattach the device, and try again. - Use a mirror to ensure proper positioning so the magnetic contacts align correctly.
- Wait 2-3 minutes to allow the intensity to increase naturally as you acclimate to the
sensation. Press the device button once or use the Cefaly app to stabilize the
intensity at a level that’s noticeable and comfortable. - if needed, after 4 minutes, press and hold the device button or use the app to
manually ramp up the intensity until it reaches your desired level.
The intensity feels too high.
Possible causes:
- It takes time to adjust to the sensation of using Cefaly. When new to the device,
avoid using it at maximum intensity. You do not have to use Cefaly at maximum
intensity to see treatment benefits
Solutions:
- Adjust the treatment intensity so it feels good to you. You should feel a strong
vibration or stimulation sensation that is comfortable, never painful. Use Cefaly at
an intensity level that allows you to complete the entire Acute or Prevent treatment. - During the first 14 minutes of a session, use the Cefaly app (with CEFALY
Connected) or press the device button once to stabilize the intensity at your
preferred level. Press + in the app or press the device button again to increase the
intensity by about 1%. If the stimulation is too strong, twist the device and pull it
away from the electrode, then restart your session.
The intensity feels too low.
Possible causes:
- You might have become desensitized to the lower-strength pulses at the start of a session.
Solutions:
- Press and hold the device button during the first 14 minutes to ramp up the intensity to your desired level. Release the button to stabilize the intensity at that new level. You can repeat this until the maximum intensity is reached (after 30 consecutive seconds of holding the button). Increase only to a tolerable level.
- You can also use the Cefaly app to increase the stimulation (with CEFALY Connected).
My skin is reddened when I remove the electrode.
Possible causes:
- Often, the skin on your forehead may become reddened where the electrode was
applied, because of increased blood flow in the area during treatment. - Persistent redness may indicate an allergy to the acrylate in the electrode adhesive.
Solutions:
- Some redness is common and usually harmless. Wait a few minutes to see if it goes
away. - In rare cases, you may experience blistering, burning, itching, or swelling because
of an acrylate allergy. If this happens. stop using Cefaly and gently wash the area
with soap and water. The rash should fade within a few days and may improve with
an anti-inflammatory cream. If the condition persists, consult your healthcare
provider and contact CEFALY Technology about hypoallergenic electrodes.
I experience painful headaches, nausea, tooth pain, tinnitus (noise or ringing in the ears), or hyperlacrimation (overproduction of tears) that persist after a session is over.
Possible causes:
- These symptoms may indicate an uncommon side effect of using Cefaly.
Solutions:
- If you experience any of these symptoms persistently during or after sessions for
more than a few weeks, stop using the device and consult your healthcare provider.
My Cefaly does not power on.
Possible causes:
- The battery may not be sufficiently charged.
- The electrode may not be adhering well to your forehead.
- The device may not be properly secured to the electrode.
Solutions:
- Use the micro-USB cable, charging dock, and adapter (if applicable) to charge your
Cefaly for at least 4 hours. For first-time use, ensure the device is fully charged. - Cleanse your skin with soap and water, dry thoroughly, reposition the electrode,
reattach the device, and try again. Make sure the electrode is evenly applied and the
magnetic contacts are aligned
While the device is running, it suddenly stops with a repeated sound.
The connection between the device and your skin has been lost. Reattach the device, and
make sure you lie back or recline during treatment. If the electrode is not sticking well to
your forehead, get a new electrode and attach it to clean, dry skin.
I am experiencing blurry vision during Cefaly treatments, what should I do?
If you experience blurry vision in one or both eyes during treatment, stop the session
immediately and contact your healthcare provider. Although this is rarely reported, do not
resume treatment until you have consulted a professional. Additionally, contact our
medical department at NAmedical@cefaly.us if you’re in North America, or
GLmedical@cefaly.com if you’re outside North America.
If I am experiencing a side effect, what should I do?
Cefaly clinical trials have shown that side effects are generally minor and fully reversible. If
you experience any side effects, discontinue use and consult your healthcare provider. You
may also contact our Medical Affairs team at NAmedical@cefaly.us (North America) or
GLmedical@cefaly.com (outside North America) for further guidance
Can the sensation of the Cefaly device feel less intense over time?
If you use Cefaly regularly, you may eventually perceive the stimulation as less intense.
This is normal and does not indicate a defect. Over time, your nerves may become
accustomed to the stimulation. For some, this process may take weeks, months, or years,
while for others the intensity remains unchanged. If your device has been properly
maintained, rest assured it is working as intended.
How do I clean my device?
Clean all sides of your device, power adapter, charging dock, and cable with a soft cloth
and an alcohol-based cleaning product. Allow them to dry completely before use. Do not
submerge the device or its components in water.
Is Cefaly covered by health insurance?
Cefaly is actively working with U.S. insurance payors to expand coverage for our migraine treatment devices. Cefaly does not currently have contracts with commercial insurance company payors, Medicaid, or Medicare. However, you may be able to submit a claim for potential reimbursement using Cefaly’s HCPCS code: E0733. Coverage and reimbursement depend on your individual insurance provider and plan.
Other payment options: If you have an HSA/FSA account, you can use it to purchase the Cefaly device and/or electrodes. (Both are approved HSA/FSA expenses.) We also offer flexible payment plans through Affirm and PayPal Credit — just select your preferred option at checkout.
If you are a U.S. veteran, Cefaly is covered through the VA healthcare system. Please visit your VA healthcare provider for more information.

How do I find out if my health insurer covers Cefaly?
The best way to find out is to contact your insurer directly and ask: “Does my plan cover durable medical equipment (DME) under HCPCS Code E0733?”
If the answer is yes, then ask what documents you’ll need to submit a claim, such as a Letter of Medical Necessity from your doctor and the original receipt for your Cefaly purchase.
How do I submit a claim for insurance reimbursement for Cefaly?
It’s important to know that filing an insurance claim for Cefaly may not result in reimbursement. Insurance coverage and reimbursement depend on your individual insurance provider and plan. Here’s the process for submitting a claim:
Step 1: Contact your insurance provider.
Before submitting a claim, call your insurance company and ask:
- Does my plan cover durable medical equipment (DME) under HCPCS Code E0733?
- What documents do I need to submit for reimbursement?
- Do I need a prior authorization?
Step 2: Gather the required documents.
If your insurer does cover durable medical equipment under HCPCS Code E0733, then you’ll need to collect the documents you need to file a claim. These may include:
- Letter of Medical Necessity – This is a letter written by your healthcare provider that explains why Cefaly is essential for your migraine treatment.
- Insurance claim form – Most insurers have a standard claim form available on their website.
- Copy of your Cefaly invoice – This is the receipt that serves as your proof of purchase.
- HCPCS Code E0733 reference – Include this code in your claim submission.
Step 3: Submit your claim.
- Send your completed claim form and supporting documents to your insurance provider via mail, fax, or online portal, depending on their requirements.
- Keep copies of everything for your records.
Step 4: Follow up.
- Check with your insurer after 2-4 weeks to make sure they received your claim and ask how long it will take to process.
- If the insurer denies your claim, ask for a written explanation. You may want to consider appealing the decision with additional documentation.
What if my insurer says they won’t cover Cefaly?
Coverage and reimbursement for Cefaly depend on your individual insurance provider and plan, and are not guaranteed. If your insurer doesn’t cover Cefaly, we offer a few different payment options to make our neuromodulation device accessible to all migraine patients:
- If you have an HSA/FSA account, you can use it to purchase the Cefaly device and/or electrodes. (Both are approved HSA/FSA expenses.)
- We also offer flexible payment plans through Affirm and PayPal Credit — just select your preferred option at checkout.
- Cefaly offers a 90-day money back guarantee, so that you can return the device if you’re not able to get insurance reimbursement or if you don’t see the results you want.
What if my insurer denies my claim for reimbursement for Cefaly?
Coverage and reimbursement for Cefaly depend on your individual insurance provider and plan, and are not guaranteed.
If your health insurer refuses to pay your claim, you have the right to appeal. Insurers have to tell you why they’ve denied your claim, and they must let you know how you can dispute their decisions. You have two options:
- Internal appeal: You can ask your insurance company to conduct a review of its decision. Learn more
- External review: You can take your appeal to an independent third party for review. Learn more
What is Cefaly’s HCPCS Code for insurance reimbursement?
Cefaly has been assigned HCPCS Code E0733. This is a code used when submitting healthcare claims to Medicare, Medicaid, and other health insurers.
However, having an HCPCS code does not guarantee insurance coverage or reimbursement. This means that if you apply for coverage using Cefaly’s reimbursement code, you could receive a denial from your insurance plan.
